Franz Mack 1920-2010

A Baden entrepreneur

When he founded Europa-Park together with his eldest son Roland in 1975, Franz Mack was already 54 years old. He was a pioneer: there were hardly any amusement parks in Germany and Europe. At first, hardly anyone believed in the project. And Franz Mack did not need to take such a big risk – he was already a successful entrepreneur and also highly recognised for his technical and inventive skills. From the 1960s onwards, his company Mack in Waldkirch developed into the most successful manufacturer of bumper cars, merry-go-rounds, ghost trains, running and amusement arcades, children's railways as well as play and sales vehicles of all kinds. In addition, Europa-Park has ultimately become what many consider the most beautiful amusement park in the world. A fulfilled life, then. This year, the Europa Park founder, who died in 2010, would have turned 100. “When we do something, we do it right” – that was one of his guiding principles. At Europa-Park, the rollercoasters he developed, “Eurosat” (photo right: Mack with the model he turned into reality) and “Euro-Mir”, are lasting testaments to his creative power.
