Heroes from 96 celebrate in Europa-Park

The German national football

On 30 June 1996 in London, the German national football team became European champions for the third time, after 1972 and 1980. 25 years later the legendary footballers, led by their captain Jürgen Kinsmann, met for their first reunion in Europa-Park. 16 players from the 1996 squad attended, including Andreas Köpke, Fredi Bobic, Thomas Häßler and Matthias Sammer. As well as a festive gala evening in the “Ballroom Berlin”, the programme of the European champions included a rollercoaster quiz at the “blue fire Megacoaster” and a scooter match in the “Arena of Football”. Guests of honour also included ex-German national team trainer Joachim Löw and ex-German national team captain Philipp Lahm as well as tennis legend Boris Becker. The visit was the idea of the national trainer at the time, Berti Vogts, a close friend of the Mack family. “It’s simply great that we can see each other again here in Europa-Park after all this time – it’s like a school reunion,” explained Jürgen Klinsmann. Jürgen Mack, owner of Europa-Park, was filled with pride when greeting the European champions: “Those who know us know that we don’t just love rollercoasters, but we also love football.”
